If you've never built a website
before it can seem scary or complicated, but it isn't. You
have a couple of options when you build a website: you can
build it yourself or you can pay someone to build it for you.
It's going to be a LOT cheaper for
you to build a website yourself. It's not nearly as hard as it
sounds.
Here are the basic steps to build a
website and the places I recommend to get what you need:
1. Domain Name
- a domain name is your website address. For example,
the domain name of this site is work-at-home.us. You can
choose any available domain you want for your website.
There are a lot of
domain name companies. I have over 100 domain names and I buy
them from Act Now Domains.
They are cheap (only $12.75/year), easy to use and have
really great service. I tried a cheapie cheap place when I
first started out and there were WAY too many hassles to deal with
so it's usually better if you go with a company that you know is
good and reliable for this stuff.
3. Build a Website
Software - this is a program that a web host has for you to use where you can
choose the website design you want, insert your text and voila! you
have a website. These are really easy to use and if you found
this web page and can send email then you have enough skill to build
one.
The best, easiest and cheapest
website builders I recommend are:
Act Now Domains.
They have one of the best website builders around, hands
down. It's easy to use and cheap - only $8.95/month for
a 5 page website, email and hosting. They have great service so if you ever need
help you can call them 24 hours a day or email them. If you
just want a one page website you can get one for $14.95/year. They are
really helpful and don't give attitude.
Ipowerweb. Also really
easy to use. They have it
set up so you can easily accept credit cards via Pay Pal or a third
party gateway (these are separate companies,) and they have 24 hour
service also. They also have tutorials that walk you
through every aspect of putting up your site that are really
helpful.
3. Web Host
- this is a company that will store the website you build on their
servers so that when someone types in your domain name your website
will come up.
If you already
have a website builder, I would go ahead and use
Act Now Domains
for hosting as well. They are really reliable, have 24/7 phone
and email service, and are cheap ($8.95/month.)
4. Accepting Credit
Cards on your Website - if you want to accept
credit cards on your website you will need to set up an account with
a third party gateway. This is a service that will take the
credit card information from your customer and process it for you. PayPal
is free to set up, but it requires your customers to have a
Pay Pal account (ebay owns Pay Pal - it's a very popular, legitimate
company.) 2checkout costs $49, but it doesn't require
people to have an account with them so you will probably get more
sales using them.
If you are just starting
out and money is tight, I would set up a Pay Pal account and then
once you make $49 from your sales I would go with 2checkout.
You can also get your own merchant
account, but unless you really know what you are doing, I don't
suggest it. It's complicated and can be expensive.
